Ingredients
1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 cups milk, divided
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4–5 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray or butter.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape them into patties.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties on both sides for 2-3 minutes each, but do not fully cook them through. Set them aside.
- In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk, whisking continuously to form a gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside.
- Layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the thinly sliced onions.
- Place the browned hamburger patties over the onions.
- Add the remaining potatoes and onions on top of the patties.
- Pour the prepared gravy evenly over the layers.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, remove the foil and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Bake uncovered for another 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let it sit for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Russet potatoes are ideal for this recipe because they hold up well during baking and become perfectly tender.
- Browning the patties before baking enhances the flavor and gives them a crispy outer layer that adds texture to the casserole.
- Feel free to experiment with the gravy by adding dried herbs like thyme or rosemary for added flavor.
- You can make this casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours before baking.
- This recipe can be doubled if you’re feeding a larger crowd.
